Taj Mahal – Monument Of Love

The Taj Mahal also known as “crown of palaces” is a white marble mausoleum located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. Nothing in the world can beat the magical effect of the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is widely recognized as “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage”. Taj Mahal at Agra situated on the bank of river Yamuna. This monument of love was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died while giving birth to the Emperor’s 14th child. It is believed that it is the result of the four promises made by the emperor to his beloved wife. Among the four promises Taj was the one which was desired by Mumtaz and was completed by Emperor Shah Jahan. Her tomb lies in the lower chamber of this architectural wonder.

This architectural marvel was constructed in marble and semi precious stones which were imported from Baghdad, Punjab, Egypt, Russia, Golconda, China, Afghanistan, Ceylon, Indian Ocean and Persia. The construction started in 1632 AD and completed in 1648 AD, with the mosque, the guest house and the main gateway on the south, the outer courtyard and its cloisters were added subsequently and completed in 1653 AD. Masons, stonecutters, inlayers, carvers, painters, calligraphers, dome-builders and other artisans were requisitioned from the whole of the empire and also from Central Asia and Iran. It took approximately 22 years to build with the use of the services of 22,000 laborers and 1,000 elephants and an expenditure of approximately 32 million rupees. Ustad Ahmad Lahori was the main architect of the Taj Mahal and Amanat Khan Shirazi was the calligrapher of Taj Mahal.
